Exercise is extremely critical to your pet's physical health. The stimulation of the sights and sounds of the outdoors is excellent for your pet's mental health. All animals need human interaction and attention because if they are left alone for too long, they may get insecure which could lead to severe behavioral problems. You should be with, and play with, your animal as much as possible.

All animals require a certain amount of grooming to keep them looking and feeling their best. Grooming consists of not only brushing out the coat and bathing, but also giving special attention to the eyes, teeth, ears, nose, feet including their nails and between their toes.

Fresh water should always be available for your pet, especially during the warmer months. The water also must be changed frequently to prevent the possibility of contamination. It is also good to get into the habit of rinsing the water container/bowl at least three times per week.

Never, ever leave your animal in a locked car on a warm day as the temperature inside a car rises fairly quickly and your pet can die within a matter of minutes. Even leaving the windows cracked open does not prevent heat build-up. Dogs, in particular, do not sweat....they pant to get rid of built-up body heat. It is much better to leave them at home and take him for a nice stroll when you get back unless you may be going visiting friends or relatives which will allow you to bring them in the house with you or roam and play in their yard, preferably one that has some form of shaded area or dog house.

You should always consult with, and follow the directions of, your Veterinarian. It is highly recommended that your pet has a full physical twice per year, more often, if needed. A regular routine physical ensures that any potential health problems are identified as quickly as possible, which is especially important in puppies and older German Shepherd Dogs.**
